Stratum: The Composite Masterclass
15 CPD Hours

/STRAT-UH M/
a layer of material, naturally or artificially formed, often one of a number of layers one upon another

…. that is how a tooth is made: incremental strata of organic and inorganic substrate, each with a job to do. We teach composite the same way: built from the inside out, with the final form in mind from the first increment. The result looks grown rather than placed, functions by design rather than by adjustment, and spares you the stress of building big and cutting back.

course outline

Whatever level you're at, there's one above it.

Stratum is deliberately built for all skill levels. New graduates get the fundamentals done properly: isolation, adhesion, shade, shape, and layering protocols that remove the guesswork. Experienced clinicians refine the levels above: bilaminar layering, tint work that creates genuinely life-like character, and finishing that makes composite disappear. Because every module pairs a crafted lecture with a bench exercise, everyone works at their own edge, with faculty feedback while your hands are still on the model. The philosophy underneath it all is additive and ethical: build the tooth, don't cut it.

At the bench: five exercises, in sequence

You will complete every one of these yourself, with one-on-one feedback:

  • Shade taking, done systematically rather than hopefully

  • Class IV using the natural layering technique

  • Peg lateral built with the natural layering technique

  • Window/cut-back veneer technique on a central incisor

  • Posterior Class II bilaminar layering and tinting

In the lecture room

Each lecture sets up the bench work that follows: evidence-anchored, beautifully built, zero filler.

  • Ethical aesthetics: additive composite dentistry

  • Anterior aesthetic smile design considerations

  • Shape and shade fundamentals

  • Adhesive science and bonding theory

  • Caries removal end-points

  • Isolation fundamentals

  • Simplified layering techniques: natural layering, monoshade, and the window cut-back technique

  • Use of tints to create life-like effects and character

  • Posterior matrixing and simplified posterior morphology

  • Black triangle closure techniques

  • Diastema closure techniques

  • Polishing and finishing techniques
