Learning Objectives

Clinical dentistry has transcended beyond just the science of attaining and maintaining oral health to something that evokes a sensory response through the appreciation of that which is aesthetic. The modern aesthetic dentist is not only a physician of the oral cavity but an artist, the fabrication of a new smile no less than a painter taking their brush to a canvas. Capturing this art through photography and videography can be gratifying both for the clinician and the patient, as they appreciate the journey one has taken from disease to health and often feelings of dissatisfaction to those of joy.

Clinical photography can facilitate diagnosis, assisting with treatment planning, patient communication, monitoring of stability and disease progression, alongside serving as a vital medico-legal record. It is essential that any clinician providing cosmetic dentistry be proficient in clinical photography. It should not be the intention for one to ‘dabble’ in clinical photography but to embrace it as an essential tool, akin to using the appropriate handpiece to prepare a cavity.

This course is designed to assist the modern dental practitioner to develop the skills necessary to take high-quality photographic records, learn clinical protocols to appropriately implement such techniques, and learn basic presentation techniques to assist with patient communication and aesthetic planning.
